Response to UK Government Consultation – Proposals to Ban Microbeads and Call for Evidence on Other Sources of Microplastic Entering the Marine Environment

This report was submitted as Eunomia’s response to the UK Government consultation Proposals to ban the use of plastic microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products in the UK and call for evidence on other sources of microplastics entering the marine environment.

The report draws on evidence from research Eunomia has previously completed in this subject area and comments on whether the existing proposals are fit for purpose and other sources of potential microplastic pollution.

The consultation, published by DEFRA, aims to create a level playing field for industry, tackle inconsistency, provide consumer confidence and stopping new products containing tiny pieces of plastic ending up in the marine environment. It will contribute to the UK government and devolved administrations’ vision of “clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas” as set out in the UK Marine Policy Statement.
