We have developed a new, interactive tool to enable informed decision making about reusable packaging, working in partnership with the Meridian Institute.

The Beverage Container Reuse Advisor was built to empower Meridian’s Reuse & Refill Action Forum (RRAF) members as the first step on a journey to understanding the environmental and financial impacts of introducing a beverage container reuse system.

The tool is based on our ReSim architecture, created as a pioneering sustainable packaging system simulator. Designed to evaluate the environmental, financial, and social impacts of single-use and reusable packaging, ReSim gives decision makers robust, data-driven insights to make confident and informed choices.

The Beverage Container Reuse Advisor was launched at a webinar hosted by Meridian for RRAF members on March 27th. It focuses on non-alcoholic retail beverages sold in the United States.

The tool is designed to create a common language that will facilitate the collaboration between companies that is key to successful reuse systems. It models a reuse/refill system that offers pre-filled retail containers, which provide the beverage directly to the consumer. This excludes dispensing methods that use reusable cups or other back-end reusable vessels with which the consumer does not interact.

Accessible via a dedicated interactive webpage, the tool is supported by a user guide that offers supplementary data, assumptions, and modeling rationale to help users understand how the tool’s results are calculated. While the tool itself outlines inputs and key assumptions, the User Guide provides a more detailed explanation of how the inputs influence the calculations in the modeled system, and the justification behind key assumptions.

“The Beverage Container Reuse Advisor, powered by ReSim, is more than just a tool – it’s a common language for companies to speak to each other about reuse. By driving collaboration and providing robust, data-driven insights, we hope to unlock reuse systems at scale, paving the way for a more sustainable future.”
