Quantifying the Economic Value of Alberta’s Recycling Programs

This report, commissioned by the Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA), examines the economic value Alberta’s recycling sector brings to the province.

The research focuses specifically on job creation, through direct, indirect and induced jobs, as well as tax income, and overall Gross Value Added (GVA), which is the contribution made to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Our team established the tonnage of material collected across a range of sectors:

  • Residential;
  • Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI); and,
  • Construction and Demolition (C&D).

In addition to exploring the economic benefits of the recycling carried out by these sectors across the region, the report also identifies the economic potential of diverting material that is currently going to landfill. The report therefore also includes an assessment of additional material not currently recycled that could be captured, and the additional economic value Alberta’s recycling sector would contribute as a result.

This is the first study to present the breadth of recycling activities taking place across Alberta.
