Investment in Advanced Conversion Technologies (ACT)

This report analyses the prospects for Advanced Conversion Technologies (ACTs), such as gasification and pyrolysis as treatments for residual waste, finding several reasons to think that investors may be attracted to ACTs as the market continues to develop.

Despite recent stories highlighting problems with ACT projects, Eunomia’s analysis suggests investors may still be attracted. The business case for ACTs may be bolstered by factors such as:

  • access to Contracts for Difference funding, putting them in a position to outcompete other thermal treatment solutions in the developing market for feedstock; and
  • the ability to use syngas for higher value applications, such as industrial heat, transport and injection into natural gas network.

The report provides a map, and details of the 12 ACT waste treatment facilities either in operation or being constructed. It also highlights the challenges investors could face in securing sufficient feedstock to keep facilities in operation for the period over which debt is repaid, given the growing competition for residual waste from other facilities in the UK and on the continent.
