The Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) commissioned Eunomia to produce this document to present baseline information on single-use plastic product in the Mediterranean to support the preparation of regional guidelines on managing plastic waste.
The guidelines have been requested by the contracting parties of the Barcelona Convention as part of the Mediterranean Action Plan and will support measures to reduce harm caused by single-use plastics in the region.
The information document presented information on the production, consumption, end of life management and impacts associated with beverage bottles, including caps and lids; food containers (bowls, clamshells, trays); straws and cigarette filters in Egypt, Morocco, Montenegro and Greece.
The document made several recommendations, including: improving waste collection and separation; considering bans and levies of single-use plastic products to reduce consumption; implementing a deposit return scheme (DRS) for beverage containers; implementing extended producer responsibility for packaging; and running information campaigns.
