In a free webinar on Wednesday 16th July at 11:30-13:30 (BST), we will be joining the Construction Industry Research & Information Association (CIRIA), HR Wallingford, The National Flood Forum, The Hanneys Flood Group, and the Environment Agency to launch CIRIAās new guidance on enabling community maintenance for local flood risk management (FRM), which we helped to create.Ā Ā
The impacts of climate change mean the risk of flooding is increasing. While floods are a natural occurrence and can never be completely prevented, there are things that can be done to reduce the effects.Ā Ā
Flood risk management authorities (FRMAs) and landowners who manage riverbanks have powers and duties to manage flood risk. However, the first people to be impacted by flooding are those living and working in communities that are affected. Authorities, landowners, and communities that work together will be more effective at mitigating these impacts.Ā Ā
CIRIA’s new guidance aims to improve local resilience and define how communities can work on a voluntary basis with Risk Management Authorities (RMAs) to better reduce local flood risk. It is also designed to improve resilience and the relationships between RMAs and communities, recognising they can play a key role in flood risk management.Ā
