We are delighted to have been selected by Orkney Islands Council to undertake a capital appraisal of its proposed new integrated waste facility.

The new facility will combine waste sorting and treatment, as well as offering an opportunity to integrate some existing waste depots and household waste recycling centres. It forms part of the Council’s bold new waste strategy to improve sustainability and manage costs related to the collection, resource recovery and final treatment of waste.

Orkney currently operates a kerbside recycling scheme and has five household waste recycling centres. Waste glass is already used for local aggregate and waste is sent to nearby Shetland for use for waste to energy.

As well the planned rollout of a Deposit Return Scheme and likely forthcoming introduction of a revised Extended Producer Responsibility approach, the Council’s new strategy also includes consideration of potential future requirements around food waste.

Site selection studies have already been undertaken to identify suitable locations for the new plant and Eunomia has been selected to undertake a Capital Appraisal of the project. The work will include developing technical specifications and layouts, engaging with stakeholders and planners, and developing briefs, both for planning purposes, and to inform the design and build tender process.
