This report, commissioned by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, Canadian Stewardship Services Alliance, City Edmonton, and City of Calgary, results from our study of extended producer responsibility (EPR) for residential packaging and paper products (PPP) in Alberta, with a view to informing Alberta’s transition to a circular economy.
It includes the outcomes of our study which focused on:
- assessing Alberta’s current PPP residential recycling system;
- analysing the related supply chain and costs in Alberta; and
- outlining a future vision for EPR for residential PPP.
The result was a proposal that Albertan producers and distributors of PPP take responsibility for both the financial and operational obligations related to collection of their waste residential products and identify markets in which to recycle them. The report highlights the benefits of taking this approach.
