In this report for Derry City and Strabane District Council we set out a Zero Waste Circular Economy strategy for the region.
In the UK there is currently only a single Zero Waste Europe Municipality, which is Bute in Scotland. Additionally there is a munipicality in the Irish Republic, Cashel, which is working towards this status, although is not there yet. As such, Derry and Strabane has the opportunity to take a leading role in the UK and Ireland by transforming the area into a Zero Waste Circular Economy.
Derry and Strabane recognise the economic benefits that can be achieved through reducing waste generation, preparing items for re-use and recycling as much as possible. The council has also taken a keen interest in seeing businesses prosper and generating employment for the community, which has been the driver behind this project.
This report sets out the current position in Derry and Strabane, suggests policies for a strategy to take the area towards the vision of a Zero Waste Circular Economy and offers examples of how key sectors within the area could become more circular and the benefits this could yield.
