Climate Leadership: Tackling greenhouse gas emissions in higher education

University students

Universities play a critical role in tackling climate change; however, the challenge is complex.

Our new Climate Leadership for Universities flyer highlights the key questions institutions need to answer as pressure to act accelerates. It sets out the common obstacles holding progress back — and the expert support available to help universities overcome them.

While UK universities are making strong progress on cutting direct (Scope 1 and 2) emissions, most of their footprint lies in difficult-to-measure Scope 3 emissions: procurement, travel, commuting, and supply chains.

Those without an effective strategy in place to address these emissions risk falling short of carbon reduction targets and being less attractive to prospective students and funders.

According to QS and HEPI surveys, over 79% of students say it’s important that universities reduce their environmental impact, and over half actively research climate credentials when choosing where to study.  Meanwhile, funders like UKRI, Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK are adopting the Concordat for Environmental Sustainability and pushing LEAF accreditations.

Our flyer also showcases our work helping institutions embed climate strategy across estates, operations, procurement and travel. Case studies include developing Scope 3 targets for Imperial College London and completing a full Scope 3 assessment and decarbonisation strategy for Manchester Metropolitan University.
