A Deposit Refund System for the Czech Republic

This report is a comprehensive design and model of a deposit refund system (DRS) for disposable beverage containers in the Czech Republic.

Commissioned by Institut Cirkulární Ekonomiky (INCIEN) and Karlovarské minerální vody, the report determines the costs and implications of a Czech DRS designed to deliver a 90% recycling rate.

Our team:

  • Reviewed examples of best practice from existing DRS;
  • Conducted a mass flow analysis to identify the number of beverage containers currently recycled, littered, landfilled or incinerated in the Czech Republic;
  • Assessed the financial impacts including producer fees, handling fees and the impact on residual waste collections; and
  • Calculated the costs of central administration, reverse vending machines, retailers staff time and storage space, collection, counting centres and haulage.

The report then sets out the proposed design for the Czech DRS, and identifies the savings to be made as a result of the system.
