Cutting Lithium-ion Battery Fires in the Waste Industry

Eunomia and the Environmental Services Association (ESA) produced this report on the costs of lithium-ion battery waste fires and potential solutions with the support of a consortium bringing together key supporters the Environment Agency (EA), the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and WISH (Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum).

The report looks at the financial, environmental and societal costs of waste fires caused by lithium-ion batteries and presents a number of solutions to reduce their incidence, including a ban on disposal of these batteries in general waste and recycling streams and getting battery producers to pay for the costs of dealing with waste fires caused by their products.
