We partnered with business enterprise software provider SAP on a project to help organisations affected by the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to understand its requirements and how to effectively manage them.

The PPWR came into force February 2025, and its provisions will apply from mid-2026. It will drive major changes regarding what kind of packaging can be placed on the EU market, as well as packaging waste management and prevention measures. Importantly, all packaging placed on the EU market must be recyclable from 2030 onwards, demonstrated by a recyclability performance grade.

We produced a whitepaper: ‘Ready, Set, Comply: Preparing your business for the PPWR’ for SAP to spotlight the PPWR’s requirements and how affected businesses can develop strategies and data systems for compliance. The report outlines the main themes of the PPWR and offers guidance on the types of data required.

Our expert Ayesha Bapasola also joined SAP and sustainability platform Trellis in a webinar which focused on what PPWR means for businesses.

Ayesha said: “The PPWR will have a big impact and, if implemented well, will represent a systems shift for the way packaging is designed, used, and disposed of in the EU. It’s something that’s going to keep evolving and it’s important that affected businesses are ready for what’s ahead. For organisations navigating these changes, working with a partner who understands both the policy and the system-level implications can make all the difference.”

This report builds on our previous work with the European Commission in 2023 on the impact assessment that underpinned this PPWR.
